Tiie annual report of the Engineer-in-Chief for the Public Works Department appears in the Ministerial Statement presented to Parliament. In referring to the Arthur’s Pass tunnel, the Chief Engineer makes a reference to the eletrificaition question, a matter .which lias exercised local minds for some time past. The reports says: ‘‘The conditions affecting the electrification of the Arthur’s Pass tunnel have been investigated and the characteristics of the service have bee n ascertained in considerable detail. The Railway Department has provided particulars of the traffic anticipated and a service time-table corresponding thereto. Inquiries have been directed ,uo different, manufacturers regarding the locomotive equipment nad the maximum power which can be accommodated per axle. The weight of the locomotive and the principal features of the same have been determined. Several sources of power have been investigated and the extent of electrification discussed. No final ■ conclusions have been reached in regard to any of these points, nor has the system of traction been finally determined. Further work is being conducted with a view to reaching finality on these points, and further information obtained which will enable a decision to ho reached. ** This report is dated April Ist, hut since then the Hon Minister of Public Works has made a further statement o„ the maffer, which, though confirming the fact- that finality has not. been reached, indicated that certain stage® had been passed, and that- the final decision appeared to he centering ronnd one of two alternatives. In view of the fact that the piercing of the tunnel is now drawing to a close, it is satisfactory to .know that this imnnrtnnf. aspect of the whole projeot is receiving such full consideration.
