HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

'The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held at 7.50 p.m. Present:— Messrs 11. AI. Coulson (Deputy Mayor) C. A. Wood, 8. J. Preston, A. E. Stapleton, H. A. Thompson, and A. Parkhill.
Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs Blank and R. King.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. There was no outward correspondence. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.
From Westland Chamber of (Commerce, enclosing proposal and suggesting payment of £26 subsidy to enable overland letter mails to be brought to Hokitika from Jackson’s on Tuesday and Thursday nights,; the County Council to find £lO, Hokitika Borough £lO, Ros s Borough £3, and the three
dairy factories in the south £1 each: also enclosing a letter from the Postal Department on the subject, suggesting that the cost of the service, be found by the townspeople.—Received. Air Coulson said if the Postal authorities would agree to an over tlie counter delivery on those nights the benefit would be much more valuable, otherwise only those with private, boxes
would have any advantage. Ate. J. King moved that full enquiries be made as to an over the. counter delivery and other matters.
Mr. Wood suggested that the weight of mail to he carried should also he stipulated.
Mr. Preston seconded the motion. He ‘-thought tlie principal point of the service was that- it links the town up direct with Christchurch. The motion was agreed to. From Westland Automobile Association drawing attention to state of racecourse hill and asking for repairs; also suggesting that the Council erect r
suitable building for a benzine depot.— Received. The Overseer was authorised to attend to tho approach. Air. Thompson moved that no action he taken re benzine, depot,. Seconded by Ate. Wood and carried.
From N. Z. Railway Department, Orovmoiitli stating if Council does not
complete the ••■•••cement asked for, the steps on Hokitika river bridge leading on to W.ndeson’s Island would be removed.—Received. From Electoral Boundaries Commission, forwarding notification of alteration to West-land electorate.—Received.
Frqfm Treasurer reporting receipts £175 17s lOd, payments £413 15s Rd, debit balance £240, 3s. Accounts amounting to £ll6 4s lid were passed for payment. On ■ tlie suggestion of Mr. Parkhill it was resolved to have the horse water troughs put in order. The Council rose at 8.20 p.m.
