Air C. Toohoy was advised yesterday that his son, Pri. Win. C. Toohey, was wounded on October 4th. in France. Bb. Alary’s social and euchre tournament drew \ good attendance last I night, the proceeds of which are to be | donated to help the chaplains at the j front. The prize winners in the ladies I section were Airs. J. Cameron Ist, and Alias AT. Neads 2nd. Mr. Muir and ATr. Knvanagli wore tlie winners in the Gent’s sections. During the evening Air. Hogan contributed a song and Air. Aldridge a recitation. Tho Defence Minister has notified Airs. C. Hall Alurray St., Greymouth, that her son Private George Hall, had been killed in actio n on October 4th. Private Hall left New Zealand with the 22nd. Reinforcements. He was well known in Greymouth as i good fellow, and those who kno.w him will sincerely regret the sad news, liis mother and relatives will he comforted to know that they have the deep sympathy of many friends. Like many other boy s who have fallen on the battlefield] ho, died a hero and will be houourod for it. There is on view at Air. Brockle--1 mrst's an interesting trophy from France. It is n solid silver cup won by Sergt-Afnjor J. V. Browne of tho Canterbury Battalion, for riding in one of the m iliiarv tournaments held fey tho New Zealander,s behind the firing line. There i s also a neat certificate from General Godley for meritorious services and with tlii s latter was a personal gift of a silver match-box from the Officer Commanding, also as a mark of appreciation for the excellent services rendered. SergthjAlajor Browne who left New Zealand with the earliest forces was employed here at the time of tho installation ot the telephone system and the renewal of the telegraph line to the south district. He is well known in the Rimu district, and lias sent forward the trophies won for safe-keeping, intending to return to Westland when diseherged.
