PRIVATE J. A. DAN’N. Mr J. R. Dann, of Kauierj Forks, has been advised that Jiis son, Private John A. Dann, has been killed in action in France. 'Hie deceased, who went away with the 12th Reinforcements, was hardly 21 years ot age. H e was formerly employed by the Mail-alni i Dairy Factory Compnny. The parents and relatives will-.have the deep sympathy of many friends in their loss. LT. C 01,7 WINTER EVANS. A cable message yesterday recorded ! the death of Lieut Col. Winter Evans ! of Reefton, killed in action in France. For many years ho was Manager of the Consolidated Goldfields Ltd Reefton. He joined the colours as captain, but his brilliancy, in the short space of time, saw him rise to the honored rank that he held at the time of hi s death. He was awarded the D.S.O. and also rweivod another bar quite recently. He saw active service in the Boer War. His late father was also a soldier of repute and he was killed treacherously by the Boers when approaching under the white flag which had been displayed by the enemy. The late Lieut. -Colonel Winter-Evans’s Jvile (accompanied him to England. At the time of his death he was in charge of the 3rd Division of New Zealanders. PRIVATE GALLAHER. Tho nowg of tho death of Private Dave Gallaher, from wounds, on the 4th inst., will be received with regret by a.very large circle of,friends of the famous footballer. He saw service in the Boer War, leaving New Zealand as a private and returning as a regimental 6orgeant-major. lie enlisted towards the end of last year, immediately on hearing of the death of a younger brother at the 'front. As a footballer, Private Gallaher was well known throughout the Empire, having been captain of the famous All-Blacks in their tour of the old Country 1905-6 He represented Auckland in 1896, 1897 1899, 1900, 1903, and 1904, and represented the North Island in 1903 and New Zealand in 1903-4. He married Miss Francis, a sister of “Bolla” Francis, a well-known footballer. In civil life he held a responsible position *- i Farmers’ Freezing Company Auckland, i where he was highly respected in commercial and sporting circles as a man of sterling character la-nd a good “sport.” Private Gallaher was fortyone years of age and leaves a widow and young daughter. 1
