WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

TUESDAY, OCT., 16th,

A special meeting of the Council was held at 11.80 a.m. Present:— Messrs H Norman (County Chairman), I!. Ward, T. W. Bruce, T. W. Duff, J. Grimmond and A. Clifton. Mr. J. Grimmond (Mayor) and [Mr. G. Adamson (Councillor) represented tho Ross Borough Council. Messrs G- H. Chapman and W. ~T. Butler representing the ,Sawmilling Company were also present, and Mr. Park, County Solicitor The Chairman stated tho progress of events relating to the erection of the bridge over the Mikonui river. He outlined the result of the conference nt Ross last week, and the replies of tho Hon. W. Fraser and Sir Joseph Ward on the subject- wore also read. These had already been published. , Mr. Grimmond. stated that tho Ross Borough Council had deform! action til] a full meeting of the Council was able to deal with the matter. As far ns ho could see at present, there was only a remote chance of the Ross Boraough assisting financially. Information was also required as to tho liability of tho Council in the event of flood or other special damage to the bridge occurring. Mr. G. Adamson said he had not been present at the Council meeting, but he felt thnt they could not do anything at present, they could only report to the council. Ther was not a great hope of financial assistance being given but their host consideration would he given.

Mr. W. J.' 'Butler said it appeared to him thnt members did not grasp the full position. There was no-part of the tramway that was not essential to the traffic bridge, but there was no portion of the traffic approaches essential for the tramway bridge. At this stage the Chairman moved thnt the meeting, go into committee to discuss the question. This course was agreed to. The committee of the Council resolved : —•

“That i n the event of Stuart and Chapman building a traffic bridge and approaches, the Council agree to pay the sawmillers the sum of £I6OO, in -four payments each of £4OO, payable on April Ist 1918. October, Ist 1918, April Ist 1919, October Ist 1919; such bridge to be according to the conditions agreed upon between the parties; to secure these payments to the County Fund Account the timber royalties accruing from the south side of the Mikonui river in the Totara Riding be paid to the Genera! Fund untij the amount is reimbursed.” It was further resolved to have the necessary agreement prepared by Mr Park. The Chairman thanked the millers and Mr. Adamson of Ross for their attendance. Congratulatory remarks were passed on the action of the Council in regard to the Bridge and tho meeting eonclud od.
