In the course of the discussion in the House on the Public Works Statement Mr. Forbes expressed the opinion that public bodies were sometimes put to unnecessary expense in -bridge building, owing to the excessively high standard insisted upon bv the Public Works Department.

Tho Kokatahi river bridge will be closed to all traffic this week from 'Wednesday morning, to Friday evening to permit of repairs to the under structure. People are specially cautioned against attempting to cross at night, as the decking will be removed. During tho time the repairs are in hand when the. bridge is open for traffic, loading is not to exceed 30 cwt.
At tho send-off at tho Town Hall on Wednesday night, advantage will he taken of the public assemblage to make some presentations. On behalf of the Red Cross, the Deputy-Mayor will present medallions to voluntary workers, and Mr. H. L. Michel will make a presentation on behalf of the Royal Humane Society.
Mr. Or. H. Harle, Postmaster at Ashburton, and formerly-on tho Hokitika staff, was advised last week that, his son Second-Lieutenant D. Harle, was killed in action in Franco on October 4th. He loft with' tho 23rd Reinforcements. Ho had a brilliant scholastic career, and just prior to hifi departure from Now Zealand was admitted a barrister and solicitor of tho Supreme Court.
Visitors from Westport and the East Coast, who toured South Westland lost week, speak in the highest terms of the trip. They consider the scenery wonderful and most enjoyable at every stage because of its great variety. like all travellers south they marvel that a “country so attractive to settlor as well as tourist should have so many unbridged crossings. They report the roads to be in excellent order, hut the fords were rough as a result of the late floods.

Mr. J. A. Prostick, Efficiency Commissioner for the Canterbury and West Coast military district has approved of the proposal to form a sub-com-rnitteo from the sawmillers of tho district to act in conjunction with the West-land Advisorw Committee in all matters relating to tho particular industry referred to. Steps will he taken to this end, as also the preparation of a special report on the sawmilling industry in the district for the information for his future guidance when dealing with matters pertaining to the industry.
Referring to the projected departure of the Rev. K. D. Patcliett from Greymouth the Star says:—“During his stay in Greymouth Mr. Patcliett has not only done yeoman services for hi s church hut has taken a real live interest in the affairs of the district. As a patriotic speaker he is undoubtedly one of the best on the West Coast, and at the various send-offs ho has given some splendiu addresses To use a trite saying, Groymouth’s loss will be indeed Nelson’s gain.” Mr. Patcliett will he the principal speaker at the send-off at the Town Hall on Wednesday evening.”
Mr. I’. E. Burbury of the Efficiency Board' visited Dike Kanieri and Humphreys on Saturday, and to-day he is at. Kokatahi and Koiterangi, visits which close his Westland stay for the present. Mr. and Mrs. Burbury leave for Greymouth to-night, and on Wednesday wiill he at Totarn Flat, and Reefton on Thursday. While in this district Mr. Burbury has made himself very familiar with the place and its (industries, and the .information will be very useful to him in, the future when Westland matters are referred to him for report. He has enquired closely into the dairying industry and nlso. investigated several individual eases affected by the recruiting scheme. Upon each lie will in due turn make his recommendations to the Military Service Board.
