A SONG OF COMFORT.
(Inspired by Alasefield’s tribute to the Anzacs at Gallipoli. “ they wentto the imminent death like kings in a pageant.”) And some fool whispered that they died in vain' Whereafter came a woman with bowed head, Sick for the squandered beauty of the dead, y And asked, “ Can earth he ever rich again ? ” Unto the imminent death they went like kings, Went to high service with their angel peers. Safe from the lean, uncharitable years That rub the bloom from off oncegloi’ious things. Rendered immortal by one hour’s renown, Called up from toil obscure and dusty ways, To be a nation’s pride for all our days Kings whom no mean to-morrow Can uncrown. Comfort ye, women by the Sepulchre, Our dead live greatly —what were this world’s loss If He that gave His youth upon the Cross v ’ r - Had lived his long, long life—a carpenter ?
