At noon the troops were within a short distance of Passeheiir daele. It is too early to estimate the numbers of prisoners. The fighting continues vigorously. Aeroplanes are swooping op and down, in swarms at a‘low .altitude, freely machine gunning the enemy .infantry. The French did not .participate in the attack. •The rain ceased a I dawn. There are heavy low clouds, but the visibility is fair. The enemy artillery was active .during 1 the nfght on the central and southern portions of the bnl-tle-front especially Broodseiude •Ridge, Anzae Ridge and Ron'e's railway, .putting over a considerable number of gas shells. Between 4 a.m. and 4.40 a m. when the British barrage beuaii, enemy machine gunning answ.rcd with a terrific rattle, out tU> artillery replied tardily and erratically.
