PROVISION FOR WEST COAST
PATIENTS.
Wkuuxgtox, Oct 4
Mr W ebb asked the Minister of Public Heal tit to-day •whether lie proposed making any provision on the Estimates this year in the direction of treating the tuberculosis case 3 from the West Coast which were accommodated in sanatoria. At present West Coast patients, Mr Webb said, were sent to the Cashmere Hills Sanatorium, on condition that the West ; Const boards erected 'the necessary j shelters and guaranteed <£'2 a week i per patient. There was. however, no j further room at the Cashmere Hills Sanatorium, and, moreover, it was a big strain on the finances of the West Coast, boards to make the necessary guarantee. The lion Cl. \V. Russell, in reply, stated that lie sympathised with the West Coast hoards, which were unable to establish sanatoria in their own districts owing to the climate. He hoped during the session to brirga proposal before Parliament to give some relief to those bodies, and give them money to erect shelters of their own, either at Cashmere Hills or some other place. The Public Healtit Department had been going into t lie question of establishing another sanatorium in North Canterbury, mid if that were done, the overcrowded accommodation at Caslnneie Hills would be relieved, and room be found for patients from the West Coast.
