The committee recommended that the Tourist Department be asked to allow the use of one of its rooms at Lake Kanieri for school teaching purposes, as the present room was inadequate : and the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Hokitika, to be written to on the same subject. The report was adopted. V M r SC E I, l. AX KO US. Mr Andrews moved the following notice of motion :—“.That the Buildings Committee take into consideration the complete reconstruction of the architect’s and buildings’ department of 'the Board.” Mr Andrews said he had no intention of making charges against anyone, but .was convinced from observation that a reorganisation could be made to the advantage of all concerned. Architects and assistant architects' of the board were called upon to do much clerical work. The motion was in the direction of strengthening the department referred to. The motion was seconded by AFr Jamieson and carried.

A letter was received froth the Department, in reply to an inquiry made, pointing out that it had been decided, as a matter of economy, to discontinue the practice of examining twice candidates for qualification for junior free places, and that where a candidate could qualify in the Standard VI examination he would not be permitted to sit for the junior free place examination. The preamble to the regulations for free places, dated July g last, had abolished the special examination for junior free places. The lettter was received.

A letter was received from the Department, asking whether any action had been taken to reduce the staff of the secondary department of the Hokitika School, the average attendance for the June quarter having fallen to fifty-six, whereas if Table li of the Staff and Salaries Regulations had been, altered, as had been done in the case of the primary department, a reduction ru staff would have been necessary. The average attendance for the September quarter having fallen to fifty-two, it was agreed to inform the committee that the board would be obliged to withdraw the services of the temporary teacher, Miss G. Kempthorne, at the end of the present month. The Department of Education wrote stating that the question of amending the constitution of education boards was under consideration.

In reply to the request of the Wellington Education Board lor co-operation in an endeavour to secure for the rank and file of teachers on military service the sgme lerms (one and a quarter times the salary) as are granted to officers on military service, the board approved, and passed a motion in favour of the pay being brought up tc a teacher’s ordinary salary. Resolved that oilers be obtained for the sale of the old residence, the acceptance of same to be left in the bauds of Messrs Bignell and Grimmoud.

The teacher at Goldsborongb objected to sign the schedule of requirements in connection with'the cave of Hie residence. Resolved that no action be taken to compel the teacher to sign the schedule, and that tlie residence be left under the supervision of the Foreman who is io be asked to let. ii if possible. Air Grimmond moved :—“That the by-law relating to corporal punishment of girls over eleven years of age be amended by striking out tlie word “ prohibited ” and further amended in the direction advised by the deputation from the Teachers’ Institute before the Board at its last meeting.” The motion was agreed to.
