Tho Waimakariri started rising very rapidly yesterday afternoon and it resulted in tho„ biggest inundation for three years. About fifty motorists who were enticed out by the fine day, were caught, when getting back to Christchurch, and most of them had to stay in Kaiapoi. Three automobiles were stuck in the water and had to be pulled out by horses. -■< About 100 acres of Couttg Island is under water.
Little dainago will be dono to stacks but a good deal of crops and pasture may be spoilt. Bealey reports tho Waimakariri is about Gft above normal. , It is raining heavily from the northwest. Rakaia river is in heavy flood. FLOOD GOING DOWN. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct 8. Tho flood is now receeding. There is little damage except to pasturage.
