HOKITIKA HARBOUR BOARD
FRIDAY, Oct. 5. Tho Board held the monthly meeting at 7 p.m., —Present Messrs R. YVild, < (Chairman), F. McGregor and G. H. - Chapman. The minutes were read and confirmed and outward correspondence «p- 1 proved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Marine Department, Wellington re exports.—Received. From Napier Harbor Board, circular re improvement. —Received. From Tveech and .Malloy enclosing rent for coal wharf for year.—Received From Militaijv Headquarters, Wellington in reference to advances to soldiers, stating same could not bo granted towards payment of rates.—Received. From Minister, ,Finance thanking Board for assistance given the War Loan. —Received. From W. Scott, harbormaster, reporting since last meeting there had been a wide straight channel running straigth to sea. Several heavy freshes occurred during the month. The depth of water for September was as follows: —Springs on 2nd, 14 feet end 17th 15ft; neaps on 10th, 12ft, tnd 25th to 12ft. The recent heavy floods caused a scour of (38ft at the end of the south wall, and left some *0 to 50ft swinging. Tho terrodo has eaten completely through some of tho stay piles at the extreme end of the south side of the wall.—Received. It was resolved that tho town members visit the wall and be authorised to carry out what repairs were considered necessary. The Chairman said the positi m was as stated in tho report. The p»,iiion was a serious one. From Rate Collector stating riio rate notices had been sent out and some £IOO had already come to hand ; referring to position of Board re land adjacent to river on Gibson Quay and reccftnmending the Chairman interview tho Commissioner of Crown Lands re lease of river lands that should be pay- ' able to Board; also stating that application was being made by Stuart and Chapman Ltd, for the use of the. * pile driving apparatus.—Received; the request for use of the plant was agreed to on tlio terms it had been rented In I the past. Tho Board then rose.
