General Haig reports the enemy launched a powerful attack o n a mile front northward of Ypres—Menin road eastward of Polygon Wood. The infantry advancing in three wAves, were driven back in disorder with heavy casualties.

The enemy twice strongly renewed the attack, and for the next three hours there was heavy fighting. We repulsed them everywhere except opposite the south-easet corner of Polygon Wood, where he occupied two advanced posts.

, LONDON, Ootober 1. i A Erenah states: There was violent aerial activity on both banks of the Meuse, especially between the Meuse and Bezonvaux. , After a lively bombardment in the sector at Forges, the Germans attempted to reach our lines. Our fire easily repulsed them. Another attempt on the right bank of the Meuse also failed. Enemy aeroplanes last night bombed the region of Bar le Due causing damage and casualties. Twelve enemy aeroplanes were brought down. Our air squadrons bombed railway stations, aerodromes, cantonments, and works causing violent fires at Fresnoy le Grand. As a reprisal for the bombing of the open town of Bat le Due ■ two of our aeroplanes bombed Stutt--1 gart.
