The loss wa« discovered recently when a rich American offered to buy two pearls for £25,000 apiece. She had seen them worn by the Tsarina at a Cowes regatta years ago. The Russian Government has instituted inquiries at the Palace. The museum and safes were opened in the presence of experts and the best jewels of the Imperial Crown were found to have bee n replaced by imitations. Later it was discovered that the stones had been sent by a diplomatic messenger to the Tsarina’s Ger- . man residence at Dannstact. Further discoveries showed that valuable tapestries at the Pakoo had been replaced by copies and the originals sent abroad.
