SUBMARINE WARFARE
FRENCH STEAMER SUNK
AFTER. A LONG FIGIIT. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.] PARIS, Sop: 26. A submarine made an nttaek on a French steamer in Spanish territorial water on the. 14th. The submarine, by sheltering amidst fishing boats, prevented the steamer from using her guns effectively. After a prolonged combat, during which the vessels quitted territorial waters, the steamer was sunk five miles from land. Eight of the crew were killed and two others died of wounds. The captain was prisonerod. A REPORT UNFOUNDED.
(Received This Day at 6.50 a.m.! WASHINGTON. Sep- 26. The Navy Deportment has investigated a report that five merchant ships were sunk in a battle with submarines, cabled on 22nd, and have decided that the report was unfounded. Tho Department is introducing important changes in tho manner of making announcements of naval news.
