FARMERS AND THE BALLOT

TEMUKA GRIEVANCE. LAST MAN ON FARM TAKEN. A discussion toolc olace at the meeting of the Tennika branch of the Farmers’ Union on Tuesday on the effect of the ballot on the fanning industry. The chairman (Mr. L. Twenlyman) said that, as they all knew a proposal had been brought before the Efficiency board to have one practical man left nil each farm. Sir Janies Allen had said repeatedly that one practical man should be left, bill that was not being done, lie thought it would be advisable to send another complaint to the Minister on the subject. He had heard of a case that morning when* tlm last man on a farm of 500 acres had been taken. Several members spoke of places where the last limn had been taken.

The secretary said he knew of one instance where a man had been called and his farm left without a man on it The ewes were lambing but there

was no one to look after them. An effort was being made to get exemption for the mail if only for a time.

A motion was passed that- the secretary should be instructed to write to the Minister of Defence drawing his attention to the fact that the last man was being taken from farms. The Chairman advised members to attend meetings of the Military (Service Board and see for themselves how the business was conducted.
