The next regular meeting of the Westland Chamber of Commerce falls to be held on Tuesday evening next.
The Westland County Council will hold an ordinary meeting on Monday afternoon next. A meeting of the Westland Advisory Committee of the National Efficiency Board will bo held on Monday forenoon.
A welcome home social will be tendered to Private \Y. Fleming on Friday evening at the Public Hall, Kokatahi. Everyone invited returned soldiers, and soldiers on leave.—Advt. The Inangahua County Council is considering the question of striking a penny rate on the unimproved value for Charitable Aid and Hospital administration.
St. Mary’s Euchre Tournament and Dance wil lbo held in the Club Rooms this Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock Four handsome prizes for competition; supper provided and the usual charge of admission.—Advt. A representative of the National Efficiency Board is expected to visit Westland shortly for the purpose of investigating farming matters as affected by recruiting, especially in relation to tho dairy industry wliieh appears to be threatened very seriously in some parts of the district.
The Grey County Council has been informed by the Minister of Railways that only on three occasions inee May last had the ferry steamer from Wellington to Lyttelton failed to connect with the overland service to the Coast, and that it would he inadvisable to make any alteration at present in tho West Coast-Christchurch time-table.
The Kumara Daily Factory started the season’s operations yesterday. Indications point to another very profitable season. The Kokatahi factory eoyimeneed operations last week, the first instalment of butter coming into town yesterday. The Arahnra Factory is to commence operations on Monday next.
It is not considered likely that the forthcoming County 'elections will cause much change in the personnel of tho Grey County Council. It is too soon to speak of the probable position in Westland, but it is understood some of the seats are, likely to be contested. One of the sitting members has expressed his intention of not offering himself for re-election.
A Hard-Up euchre tournament will bo held in the Town Hall, Riniu, on 'Wednesday evening, 26th inst. HardUp music, prizes, and supper provided. Come ono and all, you will be sure to enjoy yourselves, and you will help to keep our boys’ feet warm through the coining hard times. Admission Is.— Advt. The County elections will be held on the 14th November throughout the Dominion. The rolls to be used on that occasion come into force in a week’s time, up to when persons in arrears witli rates may secure enrolment, by paying the amount dut. On the same date as the County election, tho election for representatives to the Charitable Aid and Harbor Hoards will take place in “Westland. The scarcity of labour for County works is a serious matter in the Grej County, and the Engineer put forward a scheme to organise a working party to carry out works in tho back-blocks whero labour was tinobtainable. The cost to the Council was set down at £7OO n year, transit being a considerable item. The Council referred tho matter for the consideration and attention of tho Council to come into
office in November next. Pritchard’s Peerless Pictures at the Opera House last, night drew a fair attendance despite the downpour of rain. The star feature “Trilby” was given with line effect and enjoyed byall present. The great- story of Paris life was told with compelling interest. During the evening Miss Chunn of Greymouth sang “Ben Bolt” very pleasingly while the orchestra was as usual an enjoyable section of the evening’s entertainment.
The Violet Dandies, an engaging party of ontertainers from Greymouth were unfortunate in having so wet a night for the appearance at the Princess Theatre. Although the attendance of the public was seriously affected by the iiiipropitious weather, those present had an enjoyable programme put before them. The audience showed their continued appreciation of the general excellence of the entertainment . The visitors were entertained at supper subsequently at Preston’s tea' Rooms. 'Hie death took place at the Westland Hospital yesterday of a very old resident of the district, in the person of Mr August Spohr, a native of Germany and 78 years of uge. The deceased arrived in the district late in 1864, and followed mining for many years. Of late years he lias been a resident in Hokitika, and had n»t been ailing very long before his removal to the Hospital, where lie passed away. He was a single man, and as far as is known had no relatives in the dominion.
A very old resident of Kumara passed away yesterday evening in the person of Mrs Rose Bell, at the age of 74 years. Deceased was a nativo of Ireland and had been a' resident of New Zealand for 52 years, 41 of which had been spent in Kumara. Her husband pre-deceased her 19 years ago.. She leaves a grown-up family of two sons. Richard and David, tho latter boing in the Kumara water race office, and two daughters, Miss Bell, mistress of the Kumara State School, and Mrs lx* Comte, to all of whom the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended in their sad leas.
