Men had been engaged during the day discharging cargo with a view to reaohing the burning material. An hour after they stopped work a volume of smoke issued from the hutch. The City Fire wer summoned and holes were cut in tho deck . Through several of these and tho hatch water was poured into tho hold. Towards midnight tho fire appeared to have been abated but the Brigade ] continued its operations with a view to flooding the burning cargo. , Four firemen, Penny, Gennel, hrost, Anderson, and a waterside worker, j Simms, who entered the hold, were j overtime by smoke and had to be j removed to the hospital.
