SUBMARINE WARFARE
AGAINST THE U-BOATS. SMOKE CLOUD DEFENCE. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, Sept. 20. It can lie stated with official authority that the methods adopted in the past month justify the growing confidence in the anti-submarine campaign. A naval officer ntntcs that no sensational inventions were used and no sensational results were expected. Sinkings would continue, but tho submarine was defeated. “If tho public knew what we know, they would not have the slightest anxiety. Good results are being secured by the new smoke cloud defence system. Smoke boxes thrown overboard make clouds concealing the ships. They liavo been used for some months on the great majority of British ships.”
AN INVENTION. "PARIS, Sept. 23. A high naval authority states that ships are being fitted with microphones that are so perfect that they can detect a-submarine, its distance, and in tho direction it is proceeding. [PER l-RESS ASSOCIATION.' —COPYRIGHT.] ITALIAN IVEXTION. Received, this day at 8.45 a.m. ROME, September 23, Italian Marine Commission states it has solved tbc question of making merhant ships unthinkable. . It believes that within half a year the Italian mercantile fleet will he safe from submarines. UNSTNKABLE SHIPS. (Received This Dav at 10.15. a.m.) LONDON Sept. 23. It is authoritatively stated that tlm problem of building unsinkable ships is practically mastered but naval circles are of the opinion that such ships won’t solve the submarine- menace owing to the difficulties of construction and the small cargo space.
