The- Canterbury Military Service Board will sit at Hokitika on the 28th. inst; Groyniouth Saturday 29th; Reefton, October Ist; Westport, October 2nd; and Murchison on October 3rd. A lad named John Why to, son of Mr. It. Whyte, caretaker of the Westport Jock fey Club’s racecourse, mob with a peculiar accident on Monday. He and another boy were running on the recreation reserve, when the former tripped over a log and almost severed the big toe from his foot There was a fair entr yof poultry at Christchurch Kaleyards on - Saturday, though there were insufficient birds for the demand. Table chickens realised os 6d to 10s 4d; hens 3s 6d to 7s Id; pullets os 6d to 11s 6d; ducks 5s to 8 S 4d, geese 7s to 10s 6d; turkeys 7s 6d to 325; all per pair. Two more pupils of the Canterbury j Aviation School —Ross Brodie, of Rangitata, South Canterbury, and E. T. i Sutherland, of Wanganui—passed their I flying tests on Saturday, and will be i drafted into the Royal Flying Corps. It is stated that Sutherland will bo the first Maori to enter the Royal Flying Corps. The conditions laid down bw the Imperial Government provide that a candidate must be of pure European descent. Communication, however, was established with the Imperial authorities on the point, and they agreed to accept as a pilot any candidate Maori blood provided he was not a full-blooded Maori. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when hearing the Borough byelaws case dealing with the storage of motor spirits, the Magistrate said . the Deputy Mayor had waited on him , in connection with the statements made at the last sitting with reference to interference with the Inspector in his ' duties. He was glad to publicly state , that he had found the action of the . Deputy Mayor had not been ns repre- ’ Mated and that it was not through [ the Deputy Mayor’s action that an y information had not been laid against f Malfroy as was stated in the Court at" the last hearing.
