OPERA HOUSE, FRIDAY. The star feature for to-morrow evening is “The Wager,” the first Metro wondorplay starring the eminent artiste Emily Stevens, since “The Wheel of the Law.” When the -story opens, Thorpe, a prominent joweller, is joking his business rival, Chandler, on a recent robbery committed in bis store. He boasts that lie could not be so victimised. Stone, the police commissioner, and Chandler wager Thorpe that lm can be robbed of jewels amounting to many thousands of dollars, and Thorpe accepts the wager. Stone calls in Daisy Doyle to assist him in winning it, since she the cleverest woman thief in New York, has never been caught. She Accepts the offer he makes, when Jim, her lover, returns from prison threatened with consumption, and badly needing money, but she demands a written immunity from Stone. The interest ■ never fags, for the relentless hounding of Daisy and Jim by Duggan, a detective, leads absorbingly to a happy denouncement. “The Wager” is one of the. most enthralling plays ever offered on the Metro program. • The third episode of “Peg O’ the Ring” will also be shown.
