A correspondent of the Nc-w York “Herald'’ was permitted* to cross the Channel in a fast destroyer convoying troopships. He made the trip, so liesays, for the specific purpose of observing the measures that are taken to counter the submarin* campaign, and an incident that happened during the voyage might alniost have been specially staged for the occasion. Halfway across the twin periscopes of a submarine were sighted, and in an instantthe warning had been communicated to all ships. Then came the submarine, dodged hv a: destroyer by skilful steering, and the fleet raced ahead, while patrols rushed up to eeareli for the intruders.
