CHARGE OF MURDER
[run i-itKss association. —coptkioht.] THE FINDING. VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY. GISBORNE, September 19. Justice Hosking this morning delivered a lengthy summing up. His Honor said the jury had to bo satisfied whether that murder bad been committed and if so, that the accused was the guilty person. It was for the Crown to establish the ease. The conclusion originally arrived at that it was a ease of murder and suicide had resulted in there not being as thorough an investigation as one would expect in a case of murder. In murder cases they generally had to rely on circumstantial evidence. The prisoner so far, as was known, was the last person scon with the two deceased, and according to his statement he came down to get a packhorse for Anderson. There was nothing of the deceased’s found on accused, and it was on his subsequent conduct they were asked to judge the cn'so. His Honour clearly reviewed the evidence ns to acuscd’s demeanour am also dealt with the question of motive, After half an hour’s retirement, th jury returned a verdict' of “not guilty.’
