The Executive Committee of tin* New ‘Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association lias received a reply from the Minister of Defend' to the Association’s request that increases in pensions and allowances lie made rotrospoctir*. The Minister states in liis opinion the alterations made should be applicable to all soldiers' dependents as from a definite' date, whether the soldier belonged to the Main Body or was going into camp. He feared that it was not practicable'-, to make it retrospective. The Association decided to reply that it was convinced that ill principle its claim was iust. It is unaware of any difficulties which could be regarded as making the proposal impracticable. TWO CHILDREN DROWNED. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 17. Two boys named Duncan Hell and Leslie Guthrie, both aged six years,, were drowned at A venal to-day. They were playing in a boat when they noticed the tide Beginning to rise. They got out of the boat but the flow of water was evidently too much for them, both being drowned. ' SCALDED TO DEATH. AUCKLAND, September LA. At'the impiest on the body of a mail found in the harbour a witness states that he wits convinced it was that of a seaman named Walter Ssrsliold a single man, not known to have relatives in New Zealand. The inquest was adjourned till Saturday. On an inquest regarding the death of Angus Kennedy, found dead in : bath, with an artery iu his arm opt, a verdict was returned that deceased committed the act while temporarily insane.
