ITALIAN CAMPAIGN.
FIGHT FOR SA'N GABRIELE OF FIERCEST INTENSITY. P'HEUTER’a” TELEGRAM.]
(Received this day at 1.20 a.m.,) LONDON Sept. 14
Mr. Percival Gibbon states for upwards of a fortnight a fierce battle has pivoted on Monte San Gabriele, whose long saddle and high peak rise between Gargangs Valley and Goryria plain. Austrian communiques suggest the attackers have been vanquished but, General Cadorna is relieving his brigades with ever new drafts. He continues to pound the Austrian positions with terrific bombardments and the trenches melt like snow under the unceasing jphelling. Almost terrific slaughter goes on. The Austrians at one time had 15 battalions on the summit of San Gabriele area. Barely has there been such a lavish extensive killing as the defenders of San Gabriele have undergone. General Capello commenting on the big Austrian forces pn the mountain said they were still there, but mostly dead.
Austrian report. LONDON, Sep. 14. An Austrian official message dated September 12th claims that the Italian offensive has been a failure. 1 declares that the Italian losses _M* 230,000, including 20,000 taken prisoners.
