Mrs. Davidson who has decided to leave Hokitika offers for sale her drapery business for sale as a going concern Full particulars on application. All accounts owing are requested to bo paid before September 29th. inst. Tho Chief Justice has ordered a fourth trial in the Hawke’s- Bay case in which a 3laori named Wirihana is charged with manslaughter. Three juries have disagreed in tho ease. Tho next trial will be held at Palmerston North. The charge is tho outcome of the death of a newspaper runner, whom Wirihana run down at Hastings.

St. 3lary’s e<iehre> tournament and social held last evening proved a very successful and most enjoyable evening. The gents’ prizes, donated by a wellwisher, were won hv 3lrs McCloud and Mr G. Howe. The ladies’prizes, also donated, were annexed by 3lesdames Sullivan and Heenan.. A dainty and plentiful supply of supper was provided by the ladies’ committee, and dono full justice to by all present. After the presentation of prizes the hall was cleared and a very pleasant hour spent in dancing, the music for which was supplied by 3lrs Bennett and Miss O’Connor, 3tr T. Heenan officiated as M.C.
An amended classification of tlie Secdud Division of tho Military Reserve ■ has been gazetted as follows: —(1) Notwithstanding anything contained in tho schedule to the Order-in-Council j of the 4th day of July, 1017, the desert-j od child of a reservist shall not be counted as his child for the purposes of that schedule. (2) “Deserted child’’ means n child whoso father has for a period of not less than three months next before the date of tliis Order-in-Counoil failed without just cause to provide that child with adequate maintenance. (3) ’fha circumstances that the marriage of a reservist has been dis solved, or that he has been judicially separated from his wife by decree of judicial separation, separation order, or otherwise, or that the reservist has not the legal guardianship.or custody of his child, shall not bo deemed to constitute a just, cause for failing to provide his cbihl with adequate maintenance within the meaning of the foregoing provisions
