ROSS LIME WORKS.
Messrs Lynch (Mayor), O’Donnell (Borough Engineer), Dickson (Public Works Engineer), Coates (fanners’ representative), and Alison, of Brunner, visited the lime quarry at Ross for the purpose of expediting the work and laying out the site, train line, etc. Messrs Bruce and Upjohn, of Ross, joined the party and rendered material local assistance to the three engineers, Messrs Dickson, Alison and O’Donnell, and definite decisions were made as to methods, site, etc.
Mr Upjohn leaves on Tuesday to inspect and report upon similar works in Canterbury, but in the meantime supplies of raw material for the erection of kilns will be forwarded to Ross immediately, so that everything will Re in readiness to begin operationfc\ereqting kilns when Mr Upjohn’s report is received. The construction of a small .tram-line from the quarry to the site will be taken in hand at once, and it is hoped that agricultural lime will be available from the new quarry during the coming season It was discovered that power for crushing stone is available at a small outlay, and with a view to providing crushed as well as burnt lime an inspection of'the Teremakau Co’s quarry which is crush - iiio- stone will he made during the week with the view of installing a similar plant, reports from the Teremakau settlers being highly satisfaetorv indeed. A small plant aided by a powerful water supply is doing splendid work to the satisfaction of the settlers
