Bill passed through committee, the Minister accepting an amendment providing that no work of a greater cost than £25,000 should be undertaken, unless sanctioned by the ratepayers at a poll. The Minister also accepted an amendment enabling the local bodies interested to eloct two lay members to the Commission.
The Revocation of Naturalisation Bill also passed the Committee stage. Both Bills were read a third time and passed.
The House resumed at 7.30 p.m. Tho House went into Committee on tho Finnnco Bill.
Sir Joseph Ward said ho was not able to agree to the proposal to put a penny stamp on each packet of cigarettes, but he proposed to put on an additional duty which would bring in £BO,OOO additional revenue.
The duty is as follows: —-Cigarettes not exceeding in weight 2slb per 100, £1 5s 6d the 1000 cigarettes; not other wise enumerated 10s 6d the lb. Thirty-seven clauses of the Finance Bill, including compulsory contributions to the loan, were passed. Tho House rose at 11.20 p.m.
