Notice of aplieation for a discharge as a bankrupt appears in this issue. Mrs Montgomerie, of Reofton has received word that her nephew -Private James Whittonl ,was killed in action. Deceased had for many years resided in Murchison, and was a member of the Council and highly respected Privates. I le.ndo and Hansen aro returning - home to-morrow invalided. Private Wells is continuing the voyage to Dunedin, on staff duty, and will return 1 to the Coast later Hende and Hansen will bo brought through to Hokitika by motor car on, Tuesday night. At 4 a.m., on Friday a five-roomed unoccupied cottage in Adderley Street, Westport, owned by Mr. T. Sloan, was destroyed by fire.. The brigade arrived promptly nfter the alarm was given, but the fire had almost completed its work of destruction by then. The dwelling-house was insured for £IOO in the Phoenix Office.
