PRINCESS THEATRE.
- 1 ■tir THE SALE QF AVORK
'Fhe Monster gale of Work at the Princess Theatre in aid of the rooms for the \Vestland Returned Soldiers was brought to a very successful close last evening . The receipts for the day were £lO9, a very line return indeed. There ‘is still the drawing of the nuggets and the sale af odds and ends, which will result in the returns exceeding £2OO, so that the supplies will be quite up to expectations. There was a, larger attendance yesterday than on the opening day, which accounts for the increased volume of business. The stall holders' have every reason to ho well satisfied with the result ol their labours, there being a shady demand all through the bazaar for the purchase of goods at good prices. Mrs. W. E. Williams organised the fancywork and linen stall, aind had the assistance, of many town and country folk. So also had Mrs. D. J.. Evans in charge of the Plain sowing stall. To outfit these two-interesting displays with the stock of goods shown was of course the labour of weeks and it will be a pleasure to workers to know their efforts were -so much appreciated. The School stall was under the direction of Mr. de Berry, and Misses Wilson, Goudie and Wallace. Thereto was added the hearty co-operation of the whole school, and a fine show resulted. The scholars are to me congratulated on again' throwing their usual energy and enthusiasm into the patriotic work. Misses Parley and HalH■■day, the hon. Secretaries,- were directing the stall for the Returned Soldiers and had many callers for chances in the nuggets. Mesdames J. B. Fowler and J. Morgan who. had control u. the refreshment department did splendid work, and tlieii- return to the. fund was a substantial one, so thorough had been their canvass for support. Several ladies and gentlemen assisted the stall holders in various ways at the stall. In this connection the ladies of the Literary Club were to the fore, and helped very materially towards the general success. Last night the entertainment provided by the scholars from Woodstock under the direction of Miss Nancckivell was a special draw, and the programme was quite enjoyed, every item being encored. The performance opened with a martial song, followed by a pietty dumber. “French Bonnets”. The club-swinging by a team of girls was greatly enjoyed. “Keep on Smiling with tableau effect, was one of the last items of the evening. The march “Red White and Blue” was excellently, done while the “Song of Union” at the close pleased one and all. Miss Nancefeivelf is to-ho congratulated on bringing the pupils to such proficiency. Miss A. Wells ’ably presided at the liian*. Before, the close of the Function Mr. Evans, President of the Oversea's Club took occasion to move a vote of thanks to the performers which was carried by hearty acclamation. Mr, Evans also thanked "one and all who had asisted in the laudable object m view the provision of some central headquarters for soldiers. The public who had contributed so liberally to the financial success were also thanked and thensupport asked for in 'the future as assistance might he required to see that the men who had borne the heat and burden of the war should not be toigotten. Hearty cheers Were then given for the men at the front. To-night between eight and nine o’clock at the Princess Theatre the gold nugget raffle will be drawn and any remaining goods will be disposed of bv auction and this will bring the Sale of Work, which has been so successful from every point of view, o a close.
