LIBEL ACTIONS

J ' WELLINGTON August 23. ; The libel actions against tho John i Bull Newspaper Proprietory Co. came , before the Court to-day. , In the case in which Harry Downs was plaintiff the claim was for £2OOO. It was announced that this case liuu been settled and defendant’s counsel I said that after explanations mado to him bv plaintiff defendant was satisfied that Messrs Downs Brothers are loyal Britishers, who have not siraco the outbreak of war sold or dealt with German goods of any kind and the defendant company therefore regrots any imputation to the contrary should havo appeared in its columns. In, Bird and Jensen’s case the claim was for £IOOO. In this also a settlement- was effected which Defendant's counsel said was satisfactory.

MEAT SUPPLY.

CHRISTCHURCH August 23. It i» stated that the Boiird of Trade contemplates providing tho meat supply of Christchurch from.the imporial Government stores through the medium of the freezing companies. The butchers are said to be almost unanimously against tho proposal.

DAIRY FARMERS’ REQUEST WELLINGTON August 23. A largely- attended deputation or dairy fanners asked the Prime Minister to-day that buttor-makqirs he oaitl from the Consolidated fund the difference between, tho price at which they were compelled by regulation to soil their butter in New Zealand and tbo price ruling at that time in London. The Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey refused to entertain the suggestion. Ho said that ho did not think that Cabinet or Parliament would agree to such a proposal.
