ITALIAN CAMPAIGN.
A RUSE THAT FAILED
ITALIAN SUCCESSES,
(Received this day at 12.30 a.m.) ROME, Aug. 2a. Several Austrian Divisions at Carso were so badly shattered that they have been withdrawn from, the firing line. Fighting around Hermada was marked with incredible ferocity. The Austrian reserve divisions, on the third day of the struggle, was thrown in, in an effort to break the Italian iron ring. Airmen signalled their presence, and suddenly four hundred Italian guu» opened a terrifio, accurate fire, scattering the division like chaff. Am Austrian detachment in Selo sector, wearing Italai'n uniforms, got near the Italians with a hundred machine guns, but the trick" was discovered, and all were annihilated. British and Italian naval guns were largely instrumental in piercing the defence of Carso to the northward. The Italian front is being methodically advanced along the entire line.- * The “Seckolo” states Hermada is completely invested by land and sea, and is undergoing most intense attacks. THE OARSO STRUGGLE. (Received This Dav at 10.15. a.m) ROME, Aug. 24. Austrian resistance on the Carso is stubborn on the whole front. Carso sector iB enormously valuable to the enemy, and is held by their best troops who -are fighting with great bravery, but losing ground despite counter-at-tacks. ' ] The Italian tale of prisoners does not include wounded, who are in larger numbers than in any other action on thia front.
