A, DISTINGUISHED CAREER

’ Wellington, Aug 17. Surgeon-General R. S. F. Henderson, R.A.M.C., Director-General of Medical Services in Ne w Zealand, who has been appointed a Companion o£ the most Honourable Order of the Bath, has occupied his present post in New Zealand for some two years. He was brought out to New Zealand at the special request of the Government 1o organise the New Zealand medical services, and .place them on a proper footing. The extent to which he has succeeded in this respect, and the capable manner in which his officers have worked under him, stand revealed in the present healthy condition of the men in camp, there being yesterday (says the “ Post ”) only one ca.se of serious illness in the camp hospitals—a record for any winter New Zealand has had. The new 7 Companion ol the Order of the Bitli is pne of the senior medical officers of the British Army, being third .senior honorary physician to the King. He has had special experience in administrative work, having filled the position of Assistant Director of Medical .Services to the 4UI (Quetta) Division, Southern Army of India, for some time. He has had lengthy service in the Field. ( He served, with the Soudan expedition in ISSS, receiving a medal with clasp and a bronze star, and with the Burmese expedition, 1885-S9, for which lie wears a medal with two clasps. He accompanied the Chin Lushai expedition in IS9O, and was awarded a clasp. He served in Burma, 1891, was with the Wuntlio expedition, and was mentioned in despatches, London “ Gazette,” 9th February, 1592. He saw active service again on the North-west frontier of India from 1897 to 1898, and won another medal with clasp. He-also served in the South African War, 1901-2, receiving the Queen’s medal with five clasps. General Henderson to-day was tha recipient of numerous congratulations upon the honour bestowed on him.
