The Committe mot at 7.40. p.ni. Present: —Messrs J. Iv'ng (Chair.) W. Ciooeli, T. 11. Hickson, S. Preston, D. Stevenson, A. Aitken, A. Bennett, and A. N. Harrop (Hon. Secretary.) An apology was made, for the absence of 'Mr. Lloyd. The minutes were read and confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWAH D C’OllH ESP(>NDENCE. From Education , Board, Christchurch notifying further leave ot absence to Miss Aitken. —Received. From same granting half cost of shelter sheds, stating the old gymnasium could be pulled down and portion of material-eould be utilised, also dealing with other .matters already published. Received ; It was decided to refer the shelter sheds question to the Board, as the Committee had no iunds tor the purpose From Rector, in connection with the High School Board’s payment of a pupil teacher teaching in the primary school, iTOommending that it he asked the pupil teacher lie continued until the end of the year, and that then an endeavour he made to have a course of commercial work including book-keep-ing, commercial correspondence, shoi thand and typing, of up to four hours i week, which expense could be met if the High School Board approved, by payment towards the cost involved, t cilb to £4O) for which he thought a competent instructor could he obtained for one dav per week.—Received. Mr. do Berry addressed the Committee at some length giving further details -of his proposals. x After a short discussion Mr. Stevenson moved that the letter ho'sent on to the High School Board for their consideration. Seconded by .Mr. Hurt op and carried. From Rector stating Inspectors \ ah eiitino and Brook had notified tile annual examination would he held on Sept 17, 18 and I.oth, and recommending the school term holidays he commenced on Aug. 20th ; stating the roll number. was 0(50 and average attendance 326; stating it.was proposed •„ hold sports at the school on Dominion Day, that the Caledonian Society had promised some prizes and inviting the committee’s approval and support. —Received and approved. From Toucher, South Spit reporting ihe attendance was 24.1 out of a roll number- of 2(5; asking for authority to have fence repaired.—Received ; referred to Canterbury Board. When dealing with the accounts there was a considerable discussion on the question of the supply of hooks for the tc'aschers and it was resolved that in future no free books be supplied to teachers.
There was also a free and full discussion on the question of schoolhooks-. and paper and slates; between the Hector and members of the Committee, the explanations of the Hector of his efforts to conserve the use of paper at the school, being accepted and approved. 'Fhe accounts as scheduled were passed for payment. The Visiting Committee (.Messrs Preston and King) reported on thenvisit to the school.—Received. Messrs Stevenson and ' Aitken were appointed visitors.
A number of small matters wore discussed and dealt with, including the keeping of separate accounts dealing with the Committee’s finances as between the Departmental subsidy and ither receipts. The Committee rose at 9 p.m.
