A French communique states: In Belgium an onemy attack on our new positions on both sides of the Steenbeko completely failed. YTho enemy last evening after an intense bombardment vigorously attacked on a two kilometre front between Vauclere Mill and the ,Californie Plateau inclusive. He was repulsed by our aitillery and rifle fire. Ho did not succeed in reaching our lines anywhere. Violent repeated attacks on C-erny whro also sanguinarily defeated. After a short bombardment the Germans last evening violently attaoked between Courieres Wood and Bezonvau on tho right bank of. tlio' Mouse. They were repulsed almost everywhere. The enemy gained a footing in advance trench elements of our first line. Cur aeroplanes actively participated in the operations.

BREAKS PRUSSIAN GUARDS

LONDON August 17.
Heavy night fighting developed in the outskirts of lams tho Bavarians charging and counter-charging against the Canadians madly, but vainly, making an effort to retake Hill 70. Eventually the Prussian Guards aiding the Bavarians attacked the centre of the, new Lens battle-front, but fell back under our artillery and machine-gun gun dire. Fresh troops came up on the eastern slopes of Hill 70, forcing the Canadians’ posts hack on tho left to yesterday morning’s line. The Canadians soon drove them out in confusion, re-establishing the positions westward of Cite St. August and repulsing counter-attacks. The Germans left a considerable number of guns stuck in the mud.

Mr. G- G. Robinson states that it is estimated that GOOo Prussian Guards were wiped -out in the attack on the Canadian front. The Seventh, Eighth, and Eleventh German divisions were badly broken.
A METHODICAL 'ADVANCE
LONDON, Aug. .
M. Hutiu states that the areoplanes and artillery arc playing their role dn the British methodical advance which is directed at small objectives. The surprise blows are merely an accessory iti this plan of advance, which the French are adopting. The Germans must - not expect any rest- on the Western Front.
RAIDS REPULSED.

Sir Douglas Haig reports:—Two farther counter-attacks at Lons were heavily repulsed. Thirty enemy aeroplanes* were brought down and numerous photographs were taken.

WELLINGTON, Aug. 19. Th. liigli CommisMoner reports from London,'Aug. IV't-h at 1.20 a.m. British official.— On the Ypres battle front our Allies improved their positions slightly in the neighbourhood of Steenbeck, taking further prisoners. On the Loos Rattle front we have secured the positions: captured by us yesterday afternoon gaining further ground west of liens.

General Haig reports, two enemy counter-attacks iii the morning eastward of Loos, in the neighbourhood of Boisliugo, but our barrage and machineguns drove them back.
In the first attack, the enemy were supported by Flammenwerfers, but failed.
In thje-'second attack twelve German aeroplanes were brought down, and eighteen.driven down. Twelve of ours are missing.
AIR RAID ON ZEEBRUGGE
(Received this day at 12.30 a.m.) .AMSTERDAM, Aug. 19. The Telegraaf says Allied airmen on Friday morning made a great attack on Zcebrugge, when a large quantity of bombs were dropped.
