NEW ZEALANDERS HONOURED

' ■, WELLINGTON, Aug 12

The following message, dated July Ist has been received from the New Zealand official war correspondent, Mr. .Malcolm Ross:— General Anthoine, of Hie 1: rencli Army has just paid a visit to the Now Zealand Headquarters, where lie. decorated several of our force with the Croix do Guerre. The recipients were membrs of a brigade and pioneers that recently did excellent .work assisting to dig in guns on the French front. The ceremony was quite an impressive one, the unit Concerned providing a guard of honor and a military ' band, and the Army Corps and Divisional commanders and members oi their stall being present. Not the least impressive part of the ceremony was when General Anthoine pinned on the breast oi General Plainer’s tunic the (’mix do Guerre, ni honour of his victory at the battle of Massine*. The New Zealand officers who received the medal were:— Lieutenant-Colonel W. S. Austin. Lieutenant-Colonel J. G. Roaelie. Lieutenant-Colonel * E. Stewart. Lieutenant-Colonel G. A. King. Other ranks awarded the decoration were• Sergt. T. Jones, and Sergeant M. .T. Rillstono. Rifleman G. N. McNaight. Rif'enuin C. H. Warren. Rifleman K. R. Furbv. Rifleman S. 0. StiirgessT Rifleman A. LaughlmPrivate Pint Tawihana. Private Toi Karini. Of these Sregeant Janes and Rifleman Warren were killed and the other non-coms, and men wounded in rallying out the. work. An interesting though sad feature Of the ceremonv was that owing to tho absence of the killed and wounded their medals wore pinned on the breasts of their junior commanding officers. , ‘ , 'Hie Military Medal lias been awarded to the following for gallantry in the field : Corporal W.. A. Sinton. Corporal F. G. Lynch. Private K. S. Moore. Private T. IT. Crawford. ' Sapper L. C. Whitelaw.
