(Per Press Association.—Copyright.) SINKING OF A LIGHTER. WANGANUI, Aug. 9. The lighter Dorset, owned by the New Zealand Refrigerating -Company, sprang a leak last evening when returning to port, arid drifted off Ivaiwi, where she foundered in seven fathoms. Tlio crew were, rescued by the lighter Thistle. The lighter Dorset was outward bound with a full load of 400 quarters of beef at practically dead low water, and when crossing the entrance struck the bar. This knocked her propellor .off', causing a leak. Fine seamanship was shown by Captain Connor, of the scow Thistle, rescuing the passengers and crew,. The signals of distress were not observed at the pilot station or by a steamer which was passing. THE CHLOROFORM CASE. CHRISTCHURCH, August 11. In the chloroform case both accused wore found guilty. Both Kinnaiv and ALenchieni were sentenced to 3 years hard labour. BOY GORED BY A BULL. NELSON, Aug. 11. At the Supremfe Court Alarea3 JosepTi Patrick Keogh was charged with forging .an application f-or a /newspaper reporter’s railway ticket. The jury after a retirement of three quarters of an hour returned a verdict of not guilty and accused was discharged. GAS WORKS. WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. A meeting in connection with the gasworkers dispute was held before the Conciliation Commissioner this afternoon, - when a satisfactory settlement was arnvqd at and an agreement was signed by both parties.
