LOSS OF THE TOKOMARU.
ADJUSTMENT OF CLAIMS. WELLINGTON, July 27th
When tho Tokomaru was torpedoed by the Germans on her voyage Home in 1914 she carried 461 carcases of frozen mutton, a. donation from the New Zealand Branch of flic Poor of Great Britain and Ireland and Belgium Relief Fund, to be used for the relief of British and Belgian people who were in distress. Tho meat- was not insured, and the general secretary of the fund (Mr. R. W. Siiallerass) was duly informed of that position by the New Zealand High Commissioner. Now b«. news has come to liand. The High Commissioner advises that actions "'ere brouglit in tlie Courts against the shipping company, for loss of cargo on the ground that the vessel was out, of its course when torpedoed and a. decision was obtained tliap filie company was responsible for the value of the cargo. (in learning these facts, the High 'Commissioner got into touch with the average adjusters, and after negotiation, obtained a 'sottlemoht of fiO per cent-, of the value of the mutton and that sum <’C3l4 8s 7d) lias accordingly been paid. The High Corhmissionbr considers this very satisfactory, especially Having regard to the faot that the consignment was not insured.
