A GALLIPOLI HERO.

PRIVATE WALTER LAMBERT.

After serving through the Galli - poli campaign, and being invalided home Lineman W. R. D. Lambert of the P.M.G.’s Dept returned to his civil duties lor the past few months in the Ashflcjld district However, the spirit of battle proved too strong and he has again enlisted, and goes to the front almost immediately. To mark their appreciation the mechanical staff entertained Sapper Lambert.at the Ash-field Exchange on Tuesday, July iotli, says the Aslifield Advertiser of Neiv South Wales. Mr McHugh presided; and in a few-well-chosen remarks referred to the patriotic action of the guest. Other speakers followed in a similar strain, a presentation, taking the form of a handsome pocket wallet, being then made by Foreman Johnston. The guest suitably replied.

Subsequently, a large gathering of linemen, representing Aslifield, Burwood and lioniebush met at the Aslifield deppt, Elizabeth St, to bid au re voir to Sapper Lambert. Inspector Mackenzie conducted the proceedings which, were of a highly enthusiastic character. During an interval between the speeches, which were all in a very eulogistic strain, Inspector Mackenzie, on .behalf of the cable and aerial staffs, presented the guest with a handsome gold medallion suitably inscribed. Sapper Lambert very feelingly replied, and the proceedings terminated with “ God Save the King.”

The guest referred to is a. well known native of Hokitika, and son of Mrs Lambert of Park Street.
