Saturday, -Ith August, will be the third anniversary of the coinmenceinerit of the war, and the Government, through the Prime Minister, is asking the local bodies to convene public meetings on the date mentioned to pass fl loyal resolution on the subject. Mr T. 11. Y Seddon’s many friends will bo pleased to learn that in April last, he was promoted to the rank of a i first lieutenant. He is now serving with > the Fourth Brigade, somewhere in France, being on the staff of the force in question. - The Westland Caledonian Society is to the fore again with a proposal for a patriotic benefit at New Year time in bid of the lH’d Cross and Overseas funds.. The matter will be discussed at the Overseas Club at 8 o’clock to-night when representatives of the three bodies will meet ’ ' While at Codford, England, about 1 Easter time, a number of West Coast soldiers foregathered and were photographed. There are over forty soldiers ! in the group, including many known hereabouts. A small card of the group is ‘ on view at the Overseas Club where friends interested may inspect this interesting picture. All the tnon appear well and happy, and quite ready for the fray. The latest voluntary enlistments included Mr. W. P. Morgan, Jnr, clerk j of Hokitika. It is pleasing to note I the patriotic spirit,, with which this young man is going w> serve has j country. Ho only became of military ago a few days ago and immediately enlisted and has since passed the Medical Board. He leaves for camp with the 33rd. Reinforcements about the 20th. of next month. j Owing to several members of the Hsdy Liverpool Committee having left the district, it is proposed at an early , date to call a public meeting to align- I ment the membership and take steps to work up a fund for a Christmas parcel and pudding fund for the men on active service both at the front and in the camps. It is hoped that there will bo a good response, from willing workers to assist in the useful patriotic duties the Liverpool Committee discharges | Tho concert for the farewell to the reinforcements at the Town Hall to-mor i row night will be of special merit. In addition to the Overseas Orchestra;, quartettes and duets will he rendered by Misses Casey, Macandrew, Hatch, Burke and Harvey; Miss Lewis will reniler a monologue, and the Messrs Ross an instrumental duet- Tho male vocalists will'include Messrs Jeffries, Hogan, j 1 and Capt. Olclough. Tho speakers will 1 include the Mayors of Hokitika and Kumara, and Mr J. B Ward, and Rev. 1 H Ryan. A joint meeting of the West Coast ] Caledonian Society, Overseas Club, and j Red Cross Society will be held at tho Overseas Club this evening at 8 o’clock * to discuss their New Year’s programme. A full attendance is necessary Mrs J. L. Araott, of Creymouth, has been advised that her son, Private W. Arnott. lias been admitted to Walton-on-Tliames Hospital, July 14th, gunshot wound right arm and hand. He left with the 20th Reinforcements. Mr and Mrs H. Potbury, of Wanganui (lat© °f Greymouth), have been advised that their oldest son, Frank, who left New Zealand with tho 15th Reinforcements, was wounded on the abdomen on July 7th, and admitted to the Walton-on-Thames 'R/ospital. While working at his occupation as bush foreman, Mr A. Reid, of the Te Kinga Latnd and Timber Co., mdfa with a rather serious mishap on SaturI day last, having sustained severe injuries to his hand through being struck with his axo. one finger being completely severed. St. Mary’s Club Euchre Tournamentlast evening was well attended. The prize winners were Miss Hatch. Miss O’Hara and Messrs Jas. McCabe- and G. Howe. After supper an enjoyable hour was spent in dancing. Inc music was supplied bv Mrs Bennett and Mias Breeze. A capital attendance was present at Pollard’s Pictures at the Princess Theatre last evening, when the- star feature was a five act drama “Tangled Fates,” in which Miss Alice Brady, as the heroine, made a decidodly successful representation, and showed a number of fine snow scenes, including dog teams at work. At the weekly practice of the local Band last evening, the Conductor tivn C. Ross) in a few well chosen words, made feeling reference to the second anniversary of the death of Bandsman T. MoKain, who died of wounds at Malta. As a mark of respect to the late bandsman’s memory the Bnlnd stood and played the Doad March in vSaul.
