Tho submission oi postal packets .to a censor appointed by the military authorities is one onI tirely out of the control of the post I office. BODY FOUND IN LAKE. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 9. Tho body of F. J. Bateman, railway guard, was found in the lake in PuEekura Park this morning,. Bateman was a married man, with no children. Both he and his wife had been in ill-health lately. He left a note indicating his intention to commit suicide. BURNT TO DEATH. HASTINGS, July 9. A roadman's whare at Tununui was destroyed by fire. Unidentified remains believed to bo those of tho roadman, Matthew Rega'n. were discovered in the debris. DEATH FROM SCALDS. AUCKLAND, July 9th. May Mndigqp, aged six, died in tho hosptial to-day from the effects of bums and scalds caused through falling while, carrying a kettle of boiling water. SECOND DIVISION LEAGUE. WELLINGTON, this Dev. At a moot in (Tbi the Second Division League for Canterbury last night, Mr Wright moved that tho principle of pay allowances should ha so altered that pay shall lie only what is actually paid to a soldier. That all paymonts shall lie classed under headings of allowances to dependents. Also that pensions should he ns toilows:—At death, widow and dependents each £3 3s weekly; each child 10s 6d; each motherless child 17s 6d. In each easo of disablement, all soldiers £3 3s, and if an attendant is needed, the soldier to receive 15s per week extra; wife and sol© dependent each £l, to ho increased to £3 3s on the death of the soldier, each child 10s fid. Each soldier to receive a pension of £2 on reaching the age of 60 years. REMANDED. CHRISTCHURCH, July 13. Tho Police Court charge against two young men William Kinnaird l and Roht. J. Maoklen of attempting to administer .noxious drug, Inamoly chloroform, at Clarendon Hotel, war, further remanded until Friday. Bail was refused. The Police said the. iueusotl had given fictitious names. FIRE AT NELSON ~ NELSON, July 12. A fire broke out this morning in the wool drying shed at Grcenslades fellmongery. opposite the Post Office. Tho brigade confined the flames to tho brick building in which the fire originated. All the wood work was destroyed. ' All the wool was tho property of the Government and was uninsured,.the building also being uninsured. Overheating is believed to ho the cause. It was fortunate that tho fire was discovered early as tho fellmongery covers an extensive area,/-and contains many thousand pounds worth of hides, skins and wool.
