IN EXPLANATION.
(To the Editor.) . Sir, In the issue of the “Inangahua Herald” of May 30th. a paragraph was published relating to the change i n Managership of the Hokitika Branch of Hallenstein Bro.s. Ltd. Tho concluding sentence of the paragraph referred to sltabed “that Mr. Whyte leaves for camp at tho end of June and his place will be taken by a strong young Gorman.” Now, as I am tbo present manager of Hallenstein Bros. Ltd at Hokitika and presumably the person designated by the Herald as “a German” I wish t° state that I ® ll * not a German nor of German descent, nor a Pro-German, and beg to place before the public the following facts: My father was a Danish subjectHo left Denmark for New Zealand as far back as 1864 and was naturalist her* in 1879. Ho is now living in th« Nelson district- My mother was English a native of Devonshire. I myself was bom in Nelson. lam and always have been a British subject and nal , urally my sympathies are with the-A! i lies. I myself am liable to ho collet ; up in the Second Division for service I married a Nelson gh‘l and havo on< ’ cUild. I would hot think .of thus vindicating my nationality, but tha 5 mv Solicitors advise it to be the bes 1 course instead of taking action fo i libel against the “Herald” propri/ ■ tors. * I am etc., F.
