Monday, July 2. The Council met at 11 a.m., Present; Messrs 11. Norman (County Chairman), T. W. Bruce, R. Wells, J. Grimmond, A. Clifton, B. Ward, S. G. Ferguson, J, A. Murdoch and T. W. Duff INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. (Continued.) ' From Same, in regard to Woods’ protection Araliura, not considering

the road endangered, bnt Government might assist a sound.scheme i_. Native owners and tenants ccmtriVtifed to the cost also.— Received. From Commissioner of Crown Lands, acknowledging request to reserve limestone areas till a public site was. determined* upon. —Received.

AFTERNOON SITTING. The Council adjourned at 1 p.m. and resumed at 2 p.m. From District Engineer of Railways, asking reply regarding approach road to Knmara railway station. Received ; and clerk’s 1 reply approved. From Grevmontli Borough Council asking support to proposal that the Coast train service depart frota Christchurch at 9.30 a.m. instead Qf 8.30 a.m.*, in order to facilitate a better ' steamer connection.— Received. After a general discussion it was resolved to point out that it was considered it would be more advantageous if tile Union Company were urged to sail their steamers from Wellington an hour earlier. From Canterbury Education Board, enquiring as to area of gravel reserve at Wataroa available for a school site.—Received.

Petitions were received from Mnssrs Chinn, Mcßride and a number of ratepayers, objecting to the gravel reserve being granted and also objecting to the shifting of the school, Mr Bruce moved that if the Board desires it an area be granted.: Seconded by Mr Wells* Mr Mui-; cloch moved that all the correspondence be sent on to the Board for conby Mr Clifton and carried.

j From W. J. Penneliy, asking the t Council to complete the drain along 1 their property, Rotokino swamp.— ■ Received. It Vas resolved that the Overseer inspect and report. *** j From Secretary Mt Greenland Quartz Mining Coy, suggesting telephone connection between Ross and their claim, utilising the Mont D’or lino for a considerable distance. -Received ; referred to Mines Committee to report. From Canterbury Automobile Association stating they were supporting the request for a grant to improve Lake Kanieriroad. —Received; Association to be thanked.

From R. Douglas, -objecting that the cost of the Waitaha protection should be thrown on two settle.s when the safety of the valley was involved —Received.

From Bruce Bay I jprovement Committee, stating material. was ordered for the shed for the surf boat being* donated by the Government.— Received

; From Same, agreeing not to press for the transfer of the Cassell’s Flat road vote (to Vincent’s road, but urging a separate vote for the latter. — Received.

From Overseer Millner, estimating the cost of the timber for the proposed bridge at Mikonni at £I,OOO, exclusive of the cost of constructing approaches.—Received. From James Park, giving an opinion that the Council did nut have power to find the money to help build the bridge, or give certain rights to the builders.

—Received. Mi Grimmoncl moved •that a copy of the correspondence, legal opinion and report be supplied Messrs Stuart and Chapman.— Seconded by the Chairman. Mr Bruce moved an amendment that a poll be taken at next Council elections on a proposal to borrow A2,0p0 for the erection of a bridge over the Mikonui river.—Seconded by Mr Ferguson and lost. The motion was then put and agreed to.

From Same, reporting action wit] regard to Goldsborough protection.— Received.

From Roadman Nolan, monthly report of general repairs,' the roads being in satisfactory order. —Received.

From Minister of Internal Affairs, asking for free burial plots for soldiers, and whether the erection of memorials would be permitted.— Received and agreed to. From Minister cf Public Works, stating that Little Waitaha footbridge was being repaired. With regard to Waitaha traffic bridge site could not be altered from Bold Head-road, but its early el ection was unlikely. The appropriation for the bridge will be repeated on the Estimates.—deceived.

From Greymouth Borough Council, asking co-operation in a j request to the Government to appoint Grey and Westland representatives to the Legislative Council. —Received. Mr Clifton moved the request be supported.—Seconded by Mr Ferguson and carried. From Roadman Nolan, estimating cost of protection at Mahitahi at ; recommending half an acre from gravel reserve at Matainni lor school site.—Received and authority given for work agreed to. From Overseer Millner, reporting on various district matters.—Received and recommendations approved. From Same, reporting on district roadman and action taken.—Received and approved. The Chairman and Mr Duff were authorised to sign a correction to the abattoir area. FINANCE COMMITTEE’S REPORT. Your Committee have the honor to report that the accounts' presented for the month of June have been carefully examined, and beg to recommend that the amount as approved, totalling 1/9 be parsed for payment. order paper. The Chairman moved:—“That the accounts presented for the month of June, 1917, as revised/ and recommended for payment by the Finance Committee, amounting to £749 9/4, be passed for payment.”—Seconded by Mr Duff and carried.

The Chairman moved s—• “ That the allocation of revenue for the cniproposed ih tfee

surer’s statement presented •at the April meeting of the Council, be now considered and adopted.”—Seconded by Mr Duff and carried.

The Chairman moved : “ That public notice be given of the intention of the Council to make and levy at the next regular meeting of the Council a general rate of six farthings in the £ on the-.capital value of the rateable property within the County of Westland, in accordance with the provision ot section 117 of the Counties Act, 1908, the said rate to be payable fourteen days after the 7th August, 1917.”—Seconded by Mr Duff and carried. The Chairman moved that repairs to the road between Kanieri bridge and Kanieri be effected.—Seconded by Mr Duff and carried.

Leave was granted the County Clerk for two weeks.

The next meeting of the Counci was fixed for August 7tli. The Council rose at 1 p.m.
