A CORRECTION.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Allow me to correct the report of the • meeting of the Westland School Committees’ Association as presented in your * issue of 23rd insfc. The paragraph purporting to report my remarks. I regret to say, not only, contains an inaccuracy, hut conveys an entirely wrong impression of what J said. Tlie inaccuracy lies in the sentence reporting me as saying, “if the matter (allowances to committees)'was drawn under the notice of the Board forcibly they might obtain som 0 consideration.” The only reference I pnade to the allowances to, committees was when I said that the 'Board at present was giving to the committees grants far in excess of the parliamentary vote. Personally, I believe tmu, relief, so far as incidental allowances is concerned, "can come only from Parliament. The -Board is paying all it/-, possibly can—more than most Boards are doing. But your report conveys a .wrong impression, because it suggests that the most important matter I referred to was the supply of school requisites. Such, sir is not the case. I spoke also upon these important topics that the Association should devote attention to—the just collective needs of the Westland schools, technical and rural education for the" district, improved facilities for secondary education, the organising of public meetings for the purpose of arousing interest in .vital educational problems, and the widening of the local outlook. ■* A kpen desire to’help the Association to rise to higher ideals than those represented by the airing of grievances, alone prompts me to request so ■ much of your space. Thanking your, Sir, —T am etc., L. F. d 6 BERRY.
