A cable lias been received from Lieut Robert Tonnent, son of Mr and Mrs D. Torment, of Cow per Street, Greymouth, stating that he had gone through the Battles# of Messines unsca tiled. Private J P. Magee, son of Mr. T. McGee, of Greymouth was wounded in Franco on May 28th nna is also suffering from shell-shock. Private William Callinam, son of Mr James Call in on, of Greymouth, is also reported wounded in France. A Grand Concert and Ball will bo hold in -the Adelphi Theatre,. Kumara, on Friday- evening in aid of Mr S. T. Peters and family A capital programme has been arranged for the concert, and good music for the ball to follow. At a special meeting of the Kumara Racing Club hold on Tuesday night, Mr John Gilbert presiding, the question of racing curtailmont was discussed. It was finally unanimously resolved that the Kumara Club suspend racing for the duration of tho war. Kumara, liowovor, will have tho right to revert to its own day (Easter Monday) whan it again holds its raco meetings. The sad news was received yesterday that Private George Smith, who enlisted from Blackball with tho 12th Reinforcements, was killed in action in Franco on 30th May. Private Smith was a son ofMr William Smith, now of Kumara. Deceased was wellknown on the Coast and especially at Brunner, where the family lived for yeans. iT?o was a prominent footballer, haring been a member of tin* Brunner team.' A special intercession service will ho hold in the Methodist Church next Sunday evening (June 17th.) the Rev. H. Ryan will take as his subject, “Does the War Disprove Jesus Christ? Miss Edna Perry has kindly'consented to sing. The Kumara Racing Club has decided to suspend racing for th© duration of the war. Such boing tho case the day allotted to Kumara by the District Committee on Monday night is now available for the Westport Jockey Club. Should that Club not feci disposed to take up tho available permit, the Reefton and Hokitika Clubs are to agree between themselves which will utilise the permit. Tho New Zealand Trotting Conference, in acordanoe with the agreement with the Minister of Internal Affairs, is calling on the totalisator clubs to reduce their racing days by ono-third. In the case of one day clubs this request produces a' mathematical .difficulty. The Westland Trotting Club, however, in order to comply with the spirit of the request and to show a desire to meet requirements as far as possible, has offered to arrange with some other ono-day club on the Coast to trot on alternate years for the duration of the war. Thero arc nine trotting days on the Coast, so that the offer .made accounts for one of the three days’ reduction. From the remaining seven days, two days still require to bo deducted, and this should be arrived at without any undue hardship to West Coast trotting.
