Yesterday was the anniversary oi tlie death of the lato Rt. Hon. It. J. Seddon, who died at sea on June lOtli 1900. Memorial wreaths were placed on the Seddon Statuo in 'Sewell Street to mark the occasion of sad memory.

Walter Thomas Cairns and William Thomas Jones, both of Hokitika, are' the latest to attest for the West Coast quota for tho Tunnelling Corps. Tho number of men from the Coast to he mobilised on Monday next for this branch of the service is now 20. If offering, three more men will be accepted to be despatched on Tuesday next. Modern education takes practical lines for the purpose of impressing the youthful mind with a knowledge of the service conditions the pupils will have to go through when they take their places in the world. As one aspect of this system, arrangements are being made for 'the pupils of the District High iSchoil to attend tho mommy meeting of the West land County Council to-morrow in order to seo how a local body conducts public business.

In addition to five days being cut out of West Coast racing fixtures for the coming season, on the same proportion three days, will require to lie cut out of the nine days allotted to trotting between Nelson and Westland. Trbtting, however, is not governed by district committees, the Dominion trotting being under one central body which sits in Christchurch. It is not known what methods of reductions has been decided upon, but for tho whole of 'New Zeal and there will Ho 20 less days trotting out or tlie number hitherto in vogue. Trotting fixtures predominate in the South Island, as against tlie North Island.

The Kumara Times says that on Thursday evening Mrs C. Hogluud, of Greymoutli, a passenger by the train to Kumara, .mot with a very serious accident at tho Kumara Railway Station. The Hokitika train .was at the platform and tho Grey train pulled up oil the outside. Mrs Hoglund was carrying her baby and in getting off tho train, and in the darkness, she missed tho bottom step, and fell heavily to tho ground. Wtili great presence of’mind she saved the child from injury, hut in doing so received more serious injury herself. She was rendered unconscious and was helped into the station where stimulants were given. -She was then taken by car to her sister’s (Mrs A. Butler) in Kumara, whither she was travelling, aim tlie doctor wru called in, it being found that she was suffering considerably from shock and bruises.

Hokitika and Kan'iori butchers notify a reduction in the price of beef of one penny per lb., as from to-day. As from to-morrow the Telegraph attendance at the Hokitika Office will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily, except Sunday. Mr. T.
