At a general meeting of the Overseas Club last night, Mr Evans (President) presiding, a short report of the halfyear’s work-was submitted, giving on outline of the activities of the Club, showing a good credit balance which was to bo applied to the building fund. Jn connection with tho vacancy caused by the retirement of Miss Moore from the secretaryship, Misses M. Halliday and K. Carley were appcfinitcl joint hon. secretaries, and reference was made to the useful pioneer worx informer by the retiring secretary. Mr L. F. le' Berry, M.A., vice-president, gave an interesting address on Imperial work, dealing trtth (1) improved attachment as between the Motherland and the Dominions; (2) trade and Empire reliance; (3) emigration and the effect of the war on the color scheme; (4) labour and capital working for tho common good; and (5) education, the backbone of tho nation. The President: Mr 11. P. Stewart, and Rev. Holloway expressed their pleasure at the interesting character of the oddioss, and a vote of thanks was accorded Mr. de Berry bv acclamation. The meeting concluded with tho singing of ®ne National Anthem.
The Overseas Orchestra will hold a weekly practice at the rooms to-mor-row evening at 8 o’clock.

Grimmond left for Christchurch to-day to' attend the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Education Board at Christchurch, and a meeting of the Advisory Board of Patriotic Societies at Wellington. Mr Griininond will return at the end of the week.
There has been a very liberal i«sponse to the call for contributions Vo the Boyal Flying Corps Hospital m England. The local list is at the Overseas Club, where donations may he left or'sent. The list will remain open for the remainder of the week. On (Saturday Mr Oliver Inglis, .01 R.uatapu, who has just come of age, volunteered and lias been accepted for active service. This is tho third son of Mr John Inglis to don kaklii. Of two brothers, Walter and William, on active service, the former returned sick, but as soon as he was able re-enlisted, is' Snow back in the firing line. Mi and Mrs Inglis will be proud ot to<u family, who are acquitting tliemi»w*» so nobly in the country’s service.
• Mrs Patrick O’Regan of Inangaliua Valley pssed away on Sunday. The deceased lady has attained tin, ripe age of 78 years and was greatly esteemed by all who knew her. She had been an invalid for many years and death was not unexpected. A sorrowing husband and family of three sons and one daughter are ieft to mourn their-loss. The eldest son is Mr. 1J. O. O’Regan, solicitor, of Wellington. -
For various reasons it is understood that the Public Works Department lias abandoned its sclienio of protective work .proposed at Kawhaka Creek, upper crossing. Over a year ago -tne stream made serious inroads, washing away part of the road, and also land and a residence. From time to time there have born visits and proposals, but now the work suggested lias been abandoned, and apparently nothing is to bo done.
In connection with the decision of Mr. P. O. tVebb, M.P., not to appeal against lii« sentence, a contemporary points out that under the War Regulations Act, it iy provided that persons convicted under the Statute must remain in gaol pending an appeal. Webb estimates (that it would take two months to set up the Appeal Board, and by that time he would have served liis sentence. If - the appeal was successful, lie could not avoid serving the sentence, so under the t-- circumstances lie hay decided not to appeal,

Very appropriately for tho celebration of the King’s, bithdav, splendid portraits of King George and Queen Mary were displayed for tne first time, while to commemorate Empire Day, a fine picture of the Landing at Anzac was also placed in the of honour in tho Soldiers’ 1 Room. All the pictures wore much admired, the Anzac ' picture particularly engaging attention because of the world ot intimate ’detail it unfolds in connection with the memorable event it calls to mind.
