Ohrisichurcii May 31
At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club the chairman stated that the main shrinkages in
revenue last year were: Nj carnations wetft £7OO less, race receipts were £IOOO less, and pnvti' grs £3OO less. Under these circa instances the net racing profit of iho ye*r (£14843 might be deemed satisfactory. It has been decided that the club’s racing profile for the ymv 1916-17 shall be dtvoted to the various war funds, Iu the course of his address the chairman (Mr W. F. M, Buckley) said that should the Government deem it wise to reduce racing then sportsmen generally would try to meet their views.
Mr G, Gonld said that he thought the club’s reduced, recaipta for the year showed that the sporting public were alive to the seriousness cf the tim3s they were living in. Probably the club had been luoky in being able to carry on racing without interference up to tbe present. If circumstances rendered it necessary that racing should b 9 reduced the club would meet the Government heartily in whatever way it was called upon, (Hear, bear). If less prosperous times were ahead of the club, it was in a good position to meet them, having over, £25,000 more or less of liquid se« ountiee, besides the buildings, etc., on Ricoerton conrs9.
