GERMAN PRISONER ESCAPES
A Determined Attempt
(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association and Reuter.) (Received May 30, at 8.50 a.m.) London, May 29 Lient Thelen, a Herman prisoner, escaped from Chelmsford Gaol. He had previously made sensational escapes from Danniogton Hail in 1915 and Maidenhead Camp in 1916, On Saturday night Tholen was apparently locked safely in his ceil, A warder saw him and a companion asleep throughout the night. Really, two mummies occupied the beds. Dummy padlocks made of cardboard replaced the picked locks of the corridor gate and gaol yard. He end' his companion climbed the wall. A cyo ! iet pursued them and found them hiding chin deep in water.
