Horn W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works states that tlio Government is continuing the public works it took in hand last financial year.

On March 31st. he had in hand over £IBO,OOO for roads and bridges. That sum is unallotted and will bo available this year. He intends to ask the Government to continue the present policy wihout imposing further restrictions on public undertakings.

Hamilton, May 29 At the Magistrate’s Court to-day the Waikerei prison escapee, Robert Jasper Ciags, who made a sensational attack on Edward Henry Peebles, a Hami ten taxi driver on the HamiltonCunbridge road on the 18ih inst, by passing a cord round his neck; and rendering him unconscious, was crraingei on three charges as follows assauUing Edward Henry Peebles, and causing him actual bodily harm, theft of a b : cycle and suit of clothes, the property of ClareDca Kelly, and being a prisoner and legal custody, did escape from confinement before the term bad expiied. He pleaded guilty to the charge of theft and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called npoD. Oa the other charges he pie ded not guilty and tlacted to be tried by a jury. He was emu mi tied for .-trial at Hamilton o i June ssb.
